New workers attend this two-day, classroom-based prevention skills training as the final step in completing Prevention Basics University. This course focuses on the knowledge and skills necessary to plan and implement effective prevention programs and is conducted by Prevention First Professional Development Resource Specialists.

This one-day training, conducted by a CAPT Associate, will explore the concept of culture and how it relates to prevention work. Culture is an important attribute to consider when implementing prevention programs. Discussion will center on defining culture, elements of culture and characteristics of culture. This training will specifically address how to adapt prevention programs to specific cultural populations and the integration of culture into evidence-based programs.

This training will help prepare facilitators to implement the Life Skills Training Elementary School Program successfully. The Life Skills Training Elementary School Program can be implemented with students in grades 3-6 to provide personal self-management skills, general social skills, and drug resistance skills. Participants will learn the research, theory, and concepts that underlie the program. The trainer will emphasize teaching techniques such as facilitation and feedback, coaching of cognitive and behavioral skills, and behavioral rehearsal to ensure students fully understand and can demonstrate the key skills taught in the curriculum. Practical implementation issues will also be discussed.
Materials are not included with this training program. Participants whose agencies have been previously trained in the model should plan to bring program curriculum to the training. Contact Kelly at 800.252.8951 ext. 122 for more information.

This training will help prepare facilitators to implement the Life Skills Training Middle School Program successfully. The Life Skills Training Middle School Program can be implemented with students in grades 6-9. The program provides students with the necessary skills to resist social (peer) pressure to smoke, drink and use other drugs; help them to develop greater self-esteem, self-mastery, and self-confidence; enable youth to effectively cope with social anxiety; and increase their knowledge of the immediate consequences of substance use. Participants will learn the research, theory, and concepts that underlie the program. The trainer will emphasize teaching techniques such as facilitation and feedback, coaching of cognitive and behavioral skills, and behavioral rehearsal to ensure students fully understand and can demonstrate the key skills taught in the curriculum. Practical implementation issues will also be discussed.

Participants who attend this two-day training will increase their understanding of the basics of public policy work as it applies to the prevention field. Participants will learn the kinds of resources and support needed for the effort, how to assess the issue and political environment, and how to effectively advocate for policy change and/or enforcement of policy. In addition, the training will cover characteristics of effective policies and specific policies related to underage drinking.

This training will introduce participants to a variety of technology applications which they can apply to their work. This training will include: how to include multimedia in presentations, ways to use Internet discussion groups (including Yahoo Groups), tips on computer/projector set-up and how to use a variety of message dissemination tools. In addition, information and materials will be shared regarding youth technology trends, youth use of technology to initiate or support substance use, and examples of technology used in prevention.

This training will help prepare facilitators to implement the Too Good for Drugs (TGFD) Program successfully. The Too Good for Drugs Program has separate, developmentally appropriate curriculum for grades K-12. TGFD is a school-based prevention program designed to reduce the risk factors and enhance the protective factors related to alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use among students. The training will focus exclusively on middle and high school grade levels, allowing a customized training that focuses on the grade levels participants need. Participants will gain hands-on experience with the core curriculum while acquiring essential prevention education teaching strategies. The trainer will familiarize participants with the research, theory, and concepts behind the program. This unique and timely training offers participants an ideal setting to network and share ideas about practical implementation.
Materials are not included with this training program. Participants should purchase and review curricula and materials prior to attending the training session.
