As we head into the new year, it’s a perfect time for families to reset, reconnect, and open the door to meaningful conversations surrounding substance use. It can be challenging to initiate these conversations, which is why “Talk. They Hear You.” offers tools and guidance to help parents talk with children about alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs.
Research shows that by the time they are seniors, almost 70% of high school students have tried alcohol, half have used an illegal drug, and more than 20% have misused a prescription drug. According to the most recent Illinois Youth Survey (IYS), 25% of Illinois teens reported using a common substance (including alcohol, e-cigarettes, or marijuana) in the past 30 days.
With statistics like these, it’s clear that youth need informed, engaged adults in their corner. That’s why "Talk. They Hear You." aims to raise parents’ awareness of the risks and prevalence of underage substance use, while providing them with the knowledge and confidence to take meaningful, proactive steps to prevent it.
