Alcohol Policy: Adoption, Enforcement and Media Advocacy

Participants who attend this two-day training will increase their understanding of specific local policy options to prevent underage drinking, including: Social Host, Minors In Possession, Mandatory RBS, Advertising/Promotion, and Event Restriction. Participants will learn how to develop a Policy Adoption Advocacy Plan based on best practice and their local political environment. Participants will also learn how to develop a Policy Implementation/Enforcement Plan to ensure that once the policy is adopted it is effectively enforced by local officials. Finally, participants will learn media advocacy strategies to support their policy adoption and/or enforcement efforts.

Applying Elements of Shared Leadership to Strengthen Coalitions "Webinar"

Coalitions function best when members collaborate and stay invested and involved in the coalition as work cannot be done by one person alone. Building Capacity for Substance Abuse Prevention

Successful prevention efforts hinge on the readiness and capacity of the community. During this two-day training, participants will be introduced to a process for assessing community readiness to address prevention problems and strategies to build community capacity. Participants will also learn how to conduct a coalition assessment and use the results to develop a plan to improve coalition functioning.

*All SAPP Sub-Grant A providers, Sub-Grant B providers. Participants must complete Overview of Strategic Planning prior to participating in this course.

 **Completion of this course is waived for Sub-Grant A providers who completed the four Capacity trainings in FY13.

Coalition Coordination

During this two-day training, participants will learn strategies for advancing and facilitating a community coalition to prevent substance abuse. Participants will learn characteristics of effective coalitions, strategies for recruiting and retaining stakeholders, and strategies for enhancing coalition organization/structure (mission and vision, clear roles and organizational structure, meeting and communication habits, decision-making and problem-solving process, leadership). Additionally, participants will enhance their ability to fulfill their role as a coalition facilitator, including meeting coordination and facilitation.

*This training is required for all SAPP Sub-Grant A and Sub-Grant B providers. Completion of this course has been waived for those who completed "Strategies for Coalition Development" facilitated by CADCA on 4/24-25/13 in Springfield or on 6/4-5/13 in Naperville.

This in-depth, two-day training will provide the opportunity to learn the steps necessary to conduct a successful focus group. Attention will be placed on question development, moderator skills, and planning critical logistical details of focus group interviews. Participants will also learn how to analyze the results of focus groups and put those results into action.

Effective Group Facilitation

The ability to lead groups is essential to a wide variety of positions within the prevention field. This two-day training builds basic facilitation skills of individuals working with youth and/or adult groups. By the end of the training, participants will understand the stages of group development and the major issues associated with them, as well as how to identify and use interventions that will influence group behavior. This is an interactive training that will incorporate theory into discussions, group interaction, role playing and practice, and applied learning.

Foundations of Youth Prevention Education

Illinois Introduction to Substance Abuse Prevention (IISAP) III: A Framework for Prevention

This one day classroom-based training introduces Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) Substance Abuse Prevention Program (SAPP) providers to SAMHSA’s Strategic Prevention Framework and explains the prevention specialist’s role in service delivery. Participants will be introduced to prevention best practice in the context of the Strategic Prevention Framework and understand the phases of the process through a problem-based learning model. Participants will also learn about their role in prevention, including an exploration of ethical issues related to their personal and professional conduct.

*All SAPP providers are required to complete this course. Participants must complete the IISAP I prior to participation in IISAP III.

Overview of Strategic Planning

Overview of Strategic Planning is a self-paced, online course that provides participants with an overview of the purpose and process used to develop a comprehensive strategic substance abuse prevention plan. Participants will gain a better understanding of the role of the community coalition and the steps involved in developing a strategic plan. 

Completion time for this course is approximately 1.5 hours. A link to access this online course will be provided upon registration. 

*All SAPP Sub-Grant A providers, Sub-Grant B providers and PFS SPF Training of Facilitators participants are required to complete this course. Participants must complete this course prior to participating in Building Capacity for Substance Abuse Prevention.

Promoting the Illinois Social Host Law Webinar

This training will provide participants with an overview of Illinois’ Social Host law. Participants will learn about the parameters of the law, consequences for violations and limitations of the law. Participants will also obtain resources and strategies for promoting enforcement of the law in their community (if there is not a local social host ordinance). ***All Sub-Grant A, Sub-Grant B and Sub-Grant C program staff are required to attend this webinar if not attended in FY16.
