Well-intended prevention efforts might not work the way we hope if our message does not meet the intended audience where they are in terms of considering change, increases defensiveness or resistance, or has unintended impacts. In this presentation, we will consider the importance of language and terminology and lessons learned from the stages of change model, motivational interviewing, and prevention science.
